Most of us remember the moment we stopped putting our hand up. Somewhere between eleven and sixteen, asking things out loud became embarrassing, and learning turned into a task you complete for someone else — graded, timed, and forgotten by the following week.
Quasi tutti ricordiamo il momento in cui abbiamo smesso di alzare la mano. Tra gli undici e i sedici anni fare domande ad alta voce è diventato imbarazzante, e imparare si è trasformato in un compito che si esegue per qualcun altro: valutato, cronometrato e dimenticato la settimana dopo.
This is not a private problem. Behind the statistic are young people who did not fail because they could not think. They failed because nothing in the room made them want to know. The Erasmus+ Programme calls this a barrier linked to education and training systems, and it puts the fault where it belongs: in the system, not inside the young person.
Non è un problema privato. Dietro la statistica ci sono giovani che non hanno fallito perché non sapevano pensare, ma perché nulla in quell'aula li ha fatti desiderare di sapere. Not for technical skill. They need experience with young people, the ability to notice when someone has gone quiet, and the confidence to raise a problem early rather than hope it resolves. They run the daily national reflection in the group's own language, travel with their team, and are the first person a participant goes to when something is wrong. Each is at least 18 and briefed on their safeguarding role before departure.
Non per competenze tecniche. Servono esperienza con i giovani, la capacità di accorgersi quando qualcuno si zittisce e il coraggio di segnalare un problema subito invece di sperare che si risolva. A town in the south of Italy that does not see many European projects. That is part of the point: on day seven the prototype leaves the venue and gets played by local young people in a public space, so the game is corrected by the exact audience it is built for before it is finished.
Una città del sud Italia che non vede molti progetti europei. Ed è anche questo il punto: il settimo giorno il prototipo esce dalla sede e viene giocato da giovani del posto in uno spazio pubblico, così il gioco viene corretto proprio dal pubblico per cui è pensato prima di essere finito.
One large main room, smaller breakout rooms, an outdoor area, a quiet room open all week, and accommodation and meals on site so nobody travels at night. The main room is deliberately underfurnished — movable chairs, long tables, wall space — because most of what happens there involves standing up and moving things around.
Una grande sala principale, stanze più piccole per i lavori di gruppo, uno spazio all'aperto, una stanza silenziosa aperta tutta la settimana, alloggio e pasti in loco perché nessuno si sposti di notte. A short round inside each session; a whole-group circle closing the day; then national team reflection with the group leader in the group's own language, because people say things in their first language they never assemble in their fourth.

The last question of every circle is what we will do differently tomorrow. Twice during the week that answer changes the following day's plan, and the group is told that it did. If it never changes, that is itself a finding about whether people are being honest with us.
L'ultima domanda di ogni cerchio è cosa faremo diversamente domani. Due volte nella settimana quella risposta cambia il programma del giorno dopo, e al gruppo viene detto che è successo. Se non cambiasse mai, sarebbe a sua volta un dato su quanto le persone sono oneste con noi.
Two intercultural evenings, long lunches, free evenings and one unscheduled free afternoon are part of the design, not gaps in it. The free block includes options that cost nothing, because “free afternoon” quietly excludes people when everyone else goes shopping.

It is not a symbolic output. It gets built out of cardboard, played badly, argued about, fixed, played again, and then tested on young people from Lamezia Terme who are not being polite. Watching strangers play something you designed, and seeing exactly where they get confused, is a fast and slightly brutal education in how communication works.
Non è un risultato simbolico. Viene costruito con il cartone, giocato male, discusso, corretto, rigiocato e poi testato su giovani di Lamezia Terme che non hanno alcuna intenzione di essere gentili. The decks are designed on day five and written during the week. The cards below are examples we wrote to show the shape of each deck — the real ones will be written by 28 young people, out of the questions they bring from home.

Every card must be playable by someone reading slowly in their second language. That is a design rule the group works under, and it is also an inclusion measure: the game cannot exclude anyone through the language it was born in.
Ogni carta deve essere giocabile da chi legge lentamente nella sua seconda lingua. È una regola di progettazione per il gruppo, ed è anche una misura di inclusione: il gioco non può escludere nessuno attraverso la lingua in cui è nato.
Alongside the game we publish a two-page summary of what the group actually found during the week, drawn from their own findings sheets — including the results that contradicted what they expected, and the participants who conclude that game mechanics did nothing for them. That is a legitimate result and it will be reported as one.

Around half the places go to young people with fewer opportunities. No participant contribution is charged to anyone. Where someone cannot pre-finance a ticket, we book and pay for it directly — offered as a standard option on the travel form, not as a favour to be asked for. The group agreement is written by participants, not presented to them, and there is no facilitator veto over the content of the cards.
Circa metà dei posti va a giovani con minori opportunità. A nessuno viene chiesta una quota. Se qualcuno non può anticipare il biglietto, lo prenotiamo e paghiamo noi direttamente — è un'opzione standard sul modulo di viaggio, non un favore da chiedere. The most sustainable decision was made in the design: the result is a file, not a product. Nothing is manufactured, boxed or shipped. Prototypes are made from reused cardboard collected locally, the week runs without printed schedules, water is refilled, meals are local and seasonal, and bus and train travel is supported where realistic. Sustainability is a standing item in the evening reflection: what did we waste today, and what could we not avoid?
La decisione più sostenibile è stata presa in fase di progettazione: il risultato è un file, non un prodotto. Niente viene fabbricato, inscatolato o spedito. I prototipi nascono da cartone riutilizzato raccolto in loco, la settimana funziona senza programmi stampati, l'acqua si ricarica, i pasti sono locali e di stagione, e il viaggio in treno o autobus è sostenuto dove realistico. La sostenibilità è un punto fisso della riflessione serale: cosa abbiamo sprecato oggi, e cosa non potevamo evitare?
A digital tool earns its place only if it lowers a threshold. Selection happens through a short form answerable from a phone and an online conversation, so nobody travels or takes a day off work to apply. During the week it is deliberately low-tech. Participants do the layout, the photography and the file preparation themselves, which is real digital skill attached to a real product.
Uno strumento digitale si merita il suo posto solo se abbassa una soglia. La selezione avviene con un modulo breve compilabile dal telefono e un colloquio online, così nessuno deve viaggiare o prendersi un giorno di ferie per candidarsi. Durante la settimana si resta volutamente low-tech. Sono i partecipanti a fare l'impaginazione, le fotografie e la preparazione dei file: competenza digitale vera, attaccata a un prodotto vero.
Before: participants shape the programme through the questions they submit and an online meeting where what they raise changes the plan — and we tell them afterwards what changed because of them. During: they hold the rules, the themes and the pacing. After: each national team runs its own local session, which is a small act of civic organising that they lead.
Prima: i partecipanti danno forma al programma con le domande che inviano e con un incontro online in cui ciò che sollevano cambia il piano — e dopo raccontiamo loro cosa è cambiato grazie a loro. Durante: decidono regole, temi e ritmo. Dopo: ogni squadra nazionale realizza la propria sessione locale, un piccolo atto di organizzazione civica che guidano loro.
Accommodation and meals on site. Two team members knowledgeable in first aid and a stocked kit in the main room. A confidential form six weeks ahead covering allergies, medical conditions and accessibility needs, which the kitchen works from. Every participant carries a small printed card with the venue address, two on-site numbers, 112, and the nearest pharmacy and hospital — because a flat phone battery is the one failure a digital guide cannot survive.
Alloggio e pasti in loco. Due persone del team con competenze di primo soccorso e una cassetta rifornita nella sala principale. Un modulo riservato sei settimane prima su allergie, condizioni mediche e necessità di accessibilità, da cui lavora la cucina. This project asks young people to talk about school, failure and being told they were not good enough, and for some that is not a neutral subject. The right to step back is in the group agreement and is used without explanation. A quiet room is open all week and its purpose is stated openly, so using it is not a confession. Sessions touching personal experience are flagged the evening before, so nobody is ambushed. We are youth workers, not clinicians, and we say so.
Questo progetto chiede ai giovani di parlare di scuola, fallimento e di quando è stato detto loro che non erano abbastanza bravi: per alcuni non è un tema neutro. Il diritto di tirarsi indietro è nel patto di gruppo e si esercita senza spiegazioni. Una stanza silenziosa resta aperta tutta la settimana e il suo scopo è dichiarato apertamente, così usarla non è una confessione. Itineraries are checked with each participant before any ticket is bought, kept simple, with long overnight layovers avoided. Someone is expecting every arrival. A contingency reserve covers a missed connection. There is a written escalation procedure everyone in the team has read, with one named safety contact whose number every group leader has before departure — so nobody is deciding who to call while something is happening.
Gli itinerari si verificano con ciascun partecipante prima di comprare qualsiasi biglietto, restano semplici e si evitano lunghi scali notturni. Ogni arrivo è atteso da qualcuno. Una riserva copre una coincidenza persa. What we expect to be able to count, and the part that cannot be counted.

On day seven the prototype leaves the venue and is played in public by local young people who have no reason to be polite. For a town in Calabria that does not see many European projects, it is a visible thing happening in a familiar place — and the game is corrected by the exact audience it is built for before it is finished.
Il settimo giorno il prototipo esce dalla sede e viene giocato in pubblico da giovani del posto che non hanno motivo di essere gentili. Per una città della Calabria che non vede molti progetti europei è qualcosa di visibile che accade in un luogo familiare — e il gioco viene corretto proprio dal pubblico per cui è pensato prima di essere finito.
Any youth worker, teacher, librarian or scout leader can download the file, print it on ordinary paper and run it that evening. That is deliberately the lowest possible adoption cost, because tools that require a budget line do not get adopted by the organisations that need them most.
Qualsiasi operatore giovanile, insegnante, bibliotecario o capo scout può scaricare il file, stamparlo su carta comune e usarlo la sera stessa. È volutamente il costo di adozione più basso possibile, perché gli strumenti che richiedono una voce di bilancio non vengono adottati proprio dalle organizzazioni che ne hanno più bisogno.
Four groups of young people who each believed their own national school system was uniquely responsible for how they feel about learning will discover, in person, that it is not. That turns a private complaint into a shared European conversation — which is exactly the territory of European Youth Goal #8, Quality Learning.
Quattro gruppi di giovani, ognuno convinto che sia il proprio sistema scolastico nazionale il solo responsabile di come si sentono rispetto all'apprendimento, scopriranno di persona che non è così. Una lamentela privata diventa una conversazione europea condivisa — esattamente il terreno dello Youth Goal europeo #8, Apprendimento di qualità.
For eight days nobody is graded. There is no right answer being withheld by a person at the front of the room. For young people whose main experience of learning has been assessment, this takes about two days to believe — and then it changes how they behave. They start volunteering things. They start finishing each other's ideas.
Per otto giorni nessuno viene valutato. Non c'è una risposta giusta trattenuta da qualcuno in fondo alla stanza. Per giovani la cui esperienza principale dell'apprendimento è stata la valutazione, ci vogliono circa due giorni per crederci — e poi cambia il loro comportamento. The follow-up is one clear commitment, repeated four times.

Each national team runs a play session of The Rabbit Hole in its own community within two months of returning — a youth centre, a library, a school room, or whatever building will lend them one. They choose the venue, the audience and the format, and they write the plan on the final day of the exchange so it leaves with them as a commitment rather than a good intention.
Ogni squadra nazionale realizza una sessione di gioco di The Rabbit Hole nella propria comunità entro due mesi dal rientro — un centro giovanile, una biblioteca, un'aula, o qualunque spazio glielo presti. Each team sends back photographs, how many people came, what confused them and which cards did not work. That feedback is what turns prototype two into the version that gets published — and nothing is published until participants have approved it. A short survey three months on asks what they have actually kept doing. We expect around a 60% response rate, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.
Ogni squadra rimanda fotografie, quante persone sono venute, cosa le ha confuse e quali carte non hanno funzionato. È quel riscontro a trasformare il prototipo due nella versione pubblicata — e nulla viene pubblicato finché i partecipanti non l'hanno approvata. The game, the translated decks, the facilitation booklet and the summary of findings go up on the Erasmus+ Project Results Platform and are shared through SALTO, openly licensed and in printable formats. There is no server to keep paying for and no platform that quietly disappears in three years. If our organisation vanished tomorrow, the files would still work.
Il gioco, i mazzi tradotti, il manuale di facilitazione e il riassunto dei risultati vanno sulla Piattaforma dei Risultati dei Progetti Erasmus+ e vengono condivisi tramite SALTO, con licenza aperta e in formati stampabili. A short, plain explanation of what Erasmus+ is and how a young person applies — delivered by someone the audience's own age who has just done it. Most of our participants will have found out this existed by accident, and they know exactly how much difference that makes.
